Robert’s hearing started to go about ten years ago. I first noticed it when he kept asking me to talk louder. But in the last couple of years, his hearing progressively deteriorated to the point where I had to shout or repeat everything I said. I was struggling to have a basic conversation with him, which resulted in us talking less and less. After 53 years of marriage, I felt like I was losing my best friend.

When Robert finally got fitted for hearing aids, it was like we were in love all over again. In the mornings, we enjoyed a cup of coffee together. At night, we stayed up late, talking on the porch. But it only took about a week before we were back to our initial problem. See, Robert had become so accustomed to wearing his hearing aids that one day he forgot to take them out before showering. Needless to say, the aids were ruined.

Since our insurance was able to replace his aids just once, we had to come up with a creative solution to prevent him from ruining them again. We set reminders on his phone and posted notes in the bathroom. But it was only a matter of two weeks before they were damaged again; and now, we would have to purchase a second pair of hearing aids in less than a month.

Since we didn’t want to give up on the hearing aids, we knew something else needed to change. That’s when we started thinking about replacing our shower with an Ella’s Bubbles walk-in tub. We chose the Companion tub, and it was indeed the solution we were looking for. Robert didn’t have to worry about forgetting to take out his hearing aids anymore. Instead, he could simply wear them while he was bathing.

What I didn’t expect though, is a tub would be the thing responsible for helping us rebuild our relationship. With the double seats, we are able to bathe together and truly enjoy each other’s company. Some nights we like to relax with hydrotherapy. Other nights we turn on the calming LED lights and enjoy a glass of wine together. I didn’t think it was possible, but I guess some things do get better with age.
